Varicose veins of the hands

Varicose veins presenting in the hands are dilated veins on the backs of the hands. Hand varicose veins are a frequent problem, posing genuine cosmetic discomfort.

Note: Here we are not discussing angioma or venous malformations, which are a separate pathology.

Hand varicose veins: causes

When discussing varicose veins of the hands, we must first eliminate the possibility of rare high-pressure compression in the arm or forearm (compression in a neighbouring area) or phlebitis of the arm.

As a general rule, these varicose veins are dilated veins on the backs of the hands that have become more visible due to:

  • Loss of vein-wall elasticity due to age.
  • Loss of fat in the inter-tendon spaces with the advancement of age.

This has become an increasingly common problem, as our hands are the first point of contact with other people socially.

Medical or surgical rejuvenation techniques (injecting various substances, lifts, etc.) have largely overlooked hand varicose veins. However, they can be an instant “give away” in a pretty, mature woman who has enjoyed the benefits of a facelift.

Cosmetic procedures for the hands have developed greatly in recent years:

  • Brown marks on the skin can be quickly removed using laser treatment.
  • The deepening of the hollows between the tendons on the back of the hand can be mitigated through injections of hyaluronic acid or silicon.

However, varicose veins on the back of the hand have always been mistakenly neglected. Furthermore, they can also be the starting point of complications: heavy bleeding from trauma, phlebitis and pain.

Hand varicose veins: treatment

Hand varicose veins treatment is simple. The only recommended procedure is surgical treatment. Sclerotherapy is contraindicated for varicose veins of the hands.

The practice of mini-invasive surgery for over 15 years as well as using local tumescent anesthesia has made the treatment of varicose veins of the hands much easier.

Hand varicose veins surgery takes place under surgical conditions, using local anesthetic, requiring no hospitalization and involving micro-incisions of 1mm.

This “mini-invasive” surgery for varicose veins is soft, a-traumatic, and involves no bleeding or hematoma. The appearance of a few small bruises is possible.
