Varicose veins complications

Varicose veins can involve complications.

Apart from their unsightly appearance and discomfort due to heavy legs, varicose veins can lead to edemas accompanied by swelling in the legs, especially when standing.

In addition, marks can appear on the lower legs due to skin pigmentation, caused by iron contained in the blood. This can lead to inflammation of the skin and ulceration (fissuring in the skin that can be difficult to heal) or a rupture of the veins causing hemorrhaging.

Over the longer term, phlebitis can also appear. Phlebitis involves blood clots in the veins. These clots can be superficial (para-phlebitis) or deep (phlebitis in the deep popliteal or femoral veins).

Lastly, phlebitis can involve further complications and lead to a pulmonary embolism (migration of the clot to the lungs), with serious consequences.

You should not wait for complications to arise before seeking treatment.
